Response of chlorophyll a to total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations in lotic ecosystems: a systematic review

چکیده

Abstract Background Eutrophication of freshwater ecosystems resulting from nitrogen and phosphorus pollution is a major environmental stressor across the globe. In this systematic review, we compiled synthesized literature on sestonic benthic chlorophyll (chl-a) responses to total (TN) (TP) concentrations in water column streams rivers provide state-of-the-science summary nutrient impacts these endpoints. This review was motivated by need for comprehensive information stressor-response relationships most common biotic response measures used state-level managers United States assess eutrophication lotic support decision making. Methods Searches peer-reviewed non-peer-reviewed articles were conducted using bibliographic databases, specialist websites, search engines. These returns supplemented with citation mapping requests material experts. Articles screened relevance pre-determined eligibility criteria, risk bias evaluated each included article based study type-specific criteria. Narrative summaries meta-analysis evaluate four primary relationships: TN-benthic chl-a, TP-benthic TN-sestonic TP-sestonic chl-a. Potential effects modifying factors validity conclusions assessed via sensitivity sub-group analysis meta-regression. Results Meta-analysis 105 articles, representing 439 cause-effect pairs, showed that mean effect sizes both chl-a TN TP positive. Of examined, had positive relationship, followed For individual U.S. states, mostly positive, few exceptions. Chlorophyll measurement method moderately significant influence size responding more strongly if fluorometry versus spectrophotometry used. Year publication negative size, as did concentration relationships. When same measured TP, tended respond similarly nutrients. Sensitivity indicated are robust studies high bias. Conclusions confirms nutrients consistently impact producer biomass worldwide. It builds previous syntheses evaluating positively range stream river conditions, but also points limits (e.g., potential saturation at concentrations). Lack consistent reporting contextual data limited our ability examine how moderating influenced Overall, responsible protecting quality evidence base column.

Chlorophyll maxima and chlorophyll: Total phosphorus ratios in Missouri reservoirs

Reducing the magnitude and frequency of peak algal biomass is a common goal of lake management. To better quantify such conditions in Missouri reservoirs, an upper boundary delineating maximum algal chlorophyll (Chlmax) across the range of total phosphorus (TP) was developed using summer monitoring data (n = 8839) and compared with 2 other Missouri datasets (n = 8188 and 5151). Typically, other...

Relation of Land-use to Total Nitrogen/ Phosphorus in Streams

Comprehensive watershed management requires the determination of both point and non-point sources of pollution within a watershed. The primary non-point source pollutants in a watershed are nutrients, sediment, animal wastes, salts, and pesticides. Nutrients are mainly nitrogen and phosphorous. Agricultural activities and wastewater treatment plants are the principal sources of nitrogen in surf...

Total Nitrogen Concentrations in Surface Water of Typical Agro- and Forest Ecosystems in China, 2004-2009

We assessed the total nitrogen (N) concentrations of 28 still surface water (lake and pond), and 42 flowing surface water (river), monitoring sites under 29 typical terrestrial ecosystems of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) using monitoring data collected between 2004 and 2009. The results showed that the median total N concentrations of still surface water were significantly highe...

A test of four plant species to reduce total nitrogen and total phosphorus from soil leachate in subsurface wetland microcosms.

Four wetland plant species (Scirpus validus, Carex lacustris, Phalaris arundinacea, and Typha latifolia) were grown in monoculture and as a four-species mixture to compare effectiveness of nutrient removal in controlled 18.93-l outdoor subsurface treatment wetland microcosms. A nutrient treatment that mimicked single-resident domestic effluent consisted of two levels of nitrogen (N) and phospho...
